Learn what a bubbler is.

A bubbler is a smoking device that is a cross between a hand pipe and a small water pipe. It consists of a bowl for dried herbs, a stem that extends into a water-filled chamber, and a mouthpiece for inhaling the smoke. When smoked, the water cools and filters the smoke, making it milder.

The world of herbal smoking is fascinating, and this is largely due to the various aids that optimize each session.

But whether you're a beginner or an experienced user, it's easy to confuse mini-dabs, water glass pipes, hammer bubblers, and bubbler pipes. And knowing which device is right for optimizing your smoking experience can be overwhelming.

This guide introduces you to one of the most popular options for smoking dried herbs: the bubbler . This unique device combines the features of a traditional pipe with filtration to make the smoke smoother.

We'll explain how to use a bubbler, what it consists of, what kind of smoking experience you can expect, and how to best care for it to enjoy a clean hit every time.

What is a bubbler?

You've probably heard of it before... but what exactly is a bubbler?

A bubbler is a smoking device that works with a small water chamber in which the smoke is percolated and cooled by the water before inhalation.

Depending on the model, a bubbler filters the harsh smoke from flowers, vape pens, pipes and blunts, making inhalation smoother and cooler.

When you put your mouthpiece to your lungs and inhale, the air flows through the water, creating bubbles that ensure a clean draw. The bubbler filters out impurities, allowing clean smoke to enter the pipe and your lungs. Remember to remove your finger from the mouthpiece to enjoy a full and unobstructed hit.

(If you have never used a bubbler before, a superficial guide is not enough – therefore, we will later provide step-by-step instructions on how to fill the bubbler and how to inhale correctly.)

Common features of glass bubblers

The design of a bubbler pipe combines various principles and aesthetic elements for a pure smoking experience. Each element plays an important role in preparing and filtering the smoke before it reaches your lungs. This overview explains how a bubbler pipe works.

mouthpiece

You inhale through the mouthpiece to direct the filtered smoke into your lungs. It ensures a tight seal with your lips and prevents smoke from escaping.

There are different versions that differ in the positioning of other parts to optimize the flow of smoke into the lungs: some have conical, round or straight ends to increase or decrease the pressure when inhaling.

Glass head

Place the herbs (or the blunt or pen) into the cone-shaped bowl before lighting it. You can crush the herbs beforehand or use them raw – entirely according to your taste.

Quick tip: Ground herbs burn more easily because they draw in more air when lit. Larger, whole pieces may burn less efficiently, resulting in a less than optimal smoking experience. A grinder is recommended for finer herbs.

dip tube

The downstem connects the mouthpiece to the water chamber. It ensures that the smoke enters the water and the lungs slowly and effectively. This small but important part directs the flow of smoke during inhalation.

Kickhole

The carb hole is a small hole that you can close with your thumb while smoking. It helps regulate the airflow and therefore the amount of smoke when inhaling.

Water chamber

The water chamber filters out particles and pollutants, resulting in purer smoke. Cleaner smoke is gentler on the lungs and offers a more pleasant smoking experience, especially for beginners.

Look at the side of your bubbler to accurately measure how much water to fill the chamber. The water should extend slightly above the dip tube (the tube that connects the head to the bottom of the chamber).

This is how you smoke with a bubbler

Smoking with a bubbler requires a certain understanding of the individual parts and their use – otherwise, you'll waste valuable buds and have to start over. Here's how to smoke with a bubbler:

Step 1: Prepare the bubbler
Cleaning the bubbler removes dirt and deposits, thus preventing contamination. It's best to invest in a cleaning station where all cleaning supplies are stored.

Step 2: Fill the water chamber
Fill the water chamber until the water level is slightly above the bottom of the dip tube. If the water level is not visible, you may need to experiment a bit to find the optimal fill level.

Quick tip: If you taste water while inhaling, there's too much in it and you should remove some. Conversely, if the bubbler doesn't produce any bubbles or make any gurgling noises, there's too little water and you should add more.

Step 3: Chop the blossoms
Grind the buds to improve combustion. Use a grinder if necessary to achieve an extra-fine consistency.

(If you chop the flowers too finely, you may need sieves for the head to prevent pieces that are too small from entering the chamber.)

Tip : If you're using a bubbler pipe, you'll need to insert your blunt into the holder accordingly. Keep in mind that there are different models available, so choose a bubbler that suits your needs.

Step 4: Light the herbs
Place the herbs in the borosilicate glass bowl. Light the herbs and inhale to intensify the combustion. Remember: the harder you inhale, the stronger the burn and the more intense the draw.

Step 5: Inhale
When you inhale through the mouthpiece, the flames and smoke are directed into the water chamber. The water chamber filters the smoke before it enters your body.

Breathe in as deeply as feels comfortable – luckily the bubbler cools the draft, so you won't feel any burning in your throat or chest.

4 popular bubbler types

Different bubbler models on the market offer different flavors and enjoyment experiences. Choosing the right bubbler contributes significantly to a better smoking experience.

Classic herb bubblers

You can place dried flowers directly into the bowl of a classic bubbler and use it much like a traditional bong. The advantage of bubblers lies in their smaller size and the resulting ease of transport.

Classic bubblers are characterized by an ideal design with a fixed head and carb hole, which allows you to regulate the airflow and thus individually adjust the strength of the draw.

Blunt bubbler

If you're tired of burning your chest while smoking a blunt, a blunt bubbler is the solution.

A blunt bubbler is unique because it has an integrated mouthpiece holder and is perfect for blunts and joints of any size. This makes it easy to cool down each puff of your rolled blunt.
