Cultural heritage: Since 2019, the manufacturing process has been part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
2. The characteristics of Talavera pottery
What makes a MACUSI pipe in the Talavera style so special are three main factors:
-
The glaze (esmalt): The base is always a milky-white, tin-containing glaze. This gives the ceramic its typical shine and smooth feel.
-
The colors: Traditionally, only six natural mineral colors are used: blue (the best known), yellow, black, green, orange, and mauve. The characteristic cobalt blue is the most valuable.
-
The relief: When you run your finger over the pattern, you can feel a slight raised area. The colors are applied thickly and blend slightly with the glaze during firing, creating this 3D effect.
