What is an earth pipe?

An " earth pipe " is the most primal and oldest way to smoke cannabis. It involves smoking directly from the ground. This post is about smoking through soil or clay. You don't necessarily have to try it, but if I were stranded in the wilderness without a smoking device... believe me, I would!

When researching the history of human cannabis use, one inevitably encounters earth pipes . There is a striking similarity between these pipes, which have been found all over the world. Many cultures have used them for centuries and millennia. I believe they evolved from placing cannabis directly on hot coals and inhaling the smoke. Ancient peoples like the Assyrians, Scythians, and Thracians were known to inhale the smoke from cannabis on hot coals (see the article "What is Hashish?"). Cannabis was often used as ceremonial incense. As the potency and benefits of the plant were discovered, the smoke became more concentrated. Some civilizations rapidly developed their methods of consuming cannabis, while others did not. But I want to stay with the topic of this ancient pipe and see how earth pipes can be found worldwide. They are found in Africa, North America, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

An article from the Louisiana newspaper "Le Meschacébé" dated October 15, 1921, describes how a South African author describes the construction and use of an earth pipe for smoking cannabis, known locally as a dagga:

"He digs a hole in the hard ground, about eight to ten centimeters deep and eight centimeters wide. About 30 centimeters away from it, he digs a second hole and then bores a small underground channel from one to the other. This creates a free air passage that connects the two small depressions."

He places some dried dagga leaves in the first hole, lights them, and covers them with damp clay. Using a sharpened piece of wood, he pokes holes in the clay to allow air to circulate.

Into the other hole he inserts a small, hollow reed – that's the pipe stem – presses damp clay around it and begins to smoke while kneeling.”

This is an excellent description of the use of an earth pipe and an example of how little the methods of cannabis consumption among the locals had evolved in 1921, when this was written.

In 1894, the archaeologist Mr. Lovett had a fascinating encounter while traveling through India. He observed the locals in Kashmir constructing an earth pipe that bore a striking resemblance to the pipes used by South Africans. He was deeply impressed by this discovery and remarked that these pipes embodied a universal connection: "Pipes to which, in a sense, the whole world belongs..."

In the magazine "Illustrated Archaeologist", published in September 1894, Lovett describes the old Kashmiri clay pipe:

"When several porters are together and particularly sociable, they build a large communal pipe according to the same principle, but in the shape of a crater and cone around which they all sit. Each one inserts a hollow reed through the side of the 'crater'."

The construction of clay pipes shows how they likely transitioned to using hand pipes or chillums. Apparently, the clay hardened during smoking, which certainly gave them the idea to make more portable pipes.

Surprisingly, clay pipes can also be found in North America, where they were used by indigenous tribes in ancient smoking ceremonies. In his book "Honoring the Medicine: The Essential Guide to Native American Healing," Ken Cohen describes the extraordinary " earth pipe ceremony ." In this ceremony, participants lie on their stomachs and place their pipe stems into a shared pit containing glowing coals and tobacco, with the earth itself serving as the pipe bowl. Although the smoking of cannabis is not explicitly mentioned, I find it hard to imagine that they didn't also use this technique for experimenting with cannabis, given its availability.

The more I read about it, the more I wanted to try it myself. So, what the heck, let's go!

Imagine we're stranded in the middle of nowhere and you've just broken my pipe… Damn! We've got weed, but no way to smoke it. Instead of carving something out of wood or doing anything else time-consuming, we just need to be quick and easy and try to get out of there (yeah, I'd light up a joint before trying to be rescued).

Ground pipe for beginners. A guide.

Materials:

  • cannabis
  • A hollow reed, a stick, or a straw
  • Digging tool or knife
  • Earth
  • Source of fire

1. Grind the cannabis so that it burns evenly.

2. Dig a hole approximately 7.5 cm deep and 7.5 cm wide.

3. Then dig an identical hole about 30 cm away.

4. Connect the two holes using a small, pointed stick or tool to create an underground tunnel.

5. Now that we have both openings, we'll build the pipe. Shape one of the holes into a cone (you might need to add a little more clay). We'll form our pipe from this.

6. Take your hollow object (this will be the straw from your water bottle, because this is all your fault) and insert it into the other hole. Then take some slightly damp soil or clay and seal the straw with it.

7. Get a good dose of cannabis into your head.

8. Voilà! Now everything is ready, so let's take off!

9. For a lasting effect with slight dizziness, it is recommended to do 10 push-ups before each hit and then stand up quickly afterwards :)

Hopefully, you've learned something about the oldest method of smoking and perhaps now see the ground beneath your feet in a different light. This method definitely deserves a place in the history of human cannabis use.

A note about myself.

We at Onehitter take this seriously and will be participating in the Earth Pipe World Championship in Morocco in 2026. The Onehitter team is currently in Zandvoort, preparing for the event. To increase our chances of winning and ensure a consistent airflow with the earth pipe, we're welcoming Pablo, a tunnel builder from Mexico , to our team this year . His experience and skills will show us entirely new approaches and bring us much closer to defending our title.

Here are a few impressions.

If that's too much trouble, you can simply choose a bubbler from our shop . Onehitter.de has a charming, colorful selection.
