  • The exhibition will take place from February 29 to May 26, 2024 at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.
  • It is dedicated to the profound influence of hip-hop on contemporary art and culture over the last 20 years
  • The exhibition was originally organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Saint Louis Art Museum and is now being presented for the first time in Europe in Frankfurt.

  • The exhibition presents over 100 works such as paintings, photographs, sculptures, videos, fashion and vinyl by internationally renowned artists such as Lauren Halsey, Julie Mehretu, Tschabalala Self, Arthur Jafa, Khalil Joseph, Virgil Abloh and Gordon Parks.
  • It examines how hip-hop, one of the most vital movements of the 20th century, is now both a global industry and a way of life and has generated unprecedented economic, social and cultural capital.
  • Central themes are identity, racism, appropriation, sexuality, feminism and empowerment, which are taken up and negotiated by the artists .
  • The exhibition shows how hip-hop criticises, celebrates or rejects the prevailing power structures and opens up new ideas about what the body can express.

  • In addition to the main exhibition at the Schirn, there are other program items such as a video installation at the Kunstverein Familie Montez and a musical perspective at the Museum Of Modern Electronic Music (MOMEM).
