In 2007, a small group of friends set out to redefine the world of herb grinders and launched Santa Cruz Shredder . Inspired by the vibrant culture of Santa Cruz, California, we envisioned the ultimate grinding experience. With meticulous attention to detail and the expertise of our NASA engineer, we manufactured the first anodized aluminum grinder and pioneered a patented eight-surface tooth design that set us apart from the crowd.
Out of a love for Santa Cruz's surf and skate culture, we developed mills that are more than just tools - they are lifestyle pieces. Our reputation spread quickly and soon Santa Cruz Shredder became a cultural icon appreciated by skaters, surfers, herbalists and trendsetters.

PATENTED NEW TOOTH DESIGN
The Santa Cruz Shredder is perfectly constructed. After carefully analyzing the inner workings of a proper tooth design, we used a special computer program called Siemens CAD Software to develop the most “perfect” crushing tooth design ever conceived by man! Sharp edged teeth are not the best solution...Sharp edged teeth become dull and are full of burrs and tiny aluminum shards that constantly fall into your smoke mix. This is not only unhealthy but also toxic for the consumer. First, sharp-edged teeth require a high initial torque to rotate. This initial pressure forces them to bend at the base, causing “aluminum fatigue,” which eventually causes the tooth to break and release even more aluminum shards into your mix.
Our teeth are rounded at the base for strength and can withstand extreme wear and tear. They are twice as strong, never become dull and never release burrs or aluminum splinters. Comparable grinders cut once – and allow bb-sized pieces to pass through the holes without the need for further grinding. Our teeth are designed to cut in multiple directions, which includes clearance on both sides of the teeth (not to cut or crush herbs), but to consistently "FLAKE" them PERFECTLY.
REVOLUTIONARY NEW THREAD DESIGN
Santa Cruz Shredder has solved this frustrating problem! We have developed a unique and proprietary thread pattern that prevents seizing and permanent binding of the screwed parts. We anodize the thread surfaces to prevent seizure. Fretting is a form of surface damage that occurs between two sliding aluminum parts that are in contact with each other. Raw aluminum threads transfer wear particles from any surface and cause deposits, resulting in lumps, distortion, roughness and ultimately failure.
We have developed a new approach with a “7-catch design” that allows the user to easily put the pieces together with very little effort. Most grinders keep turning until the user finally finds the thread hook and then has to keep screwing the component until it is secure. This leads to additional wear, the possibility of cross threads and a confusing number of turns.
SUPERIOR MAGNETS
Santa Cruz Shredder uses the highest quality magnets in the world. We don't use "toy" magnets. Cheap magnets are weak, tend to fall out, and their protective coating will flake off and get into your smoking blend. We use diametrically magnetized neodymium rare earth cylindrical magnets. Triple coated with nickel-copper-nickel for maximum durability and protection against abuse and corrosion. Our superior magnets provide a reliable lid closure system that prevents your herbal blends from drying out, accidental spills, and odors from escaping.

SUPERIOR GRIP (PRECIOUS BY MEDICAL PATIENTS)
Santa Cruz Shredder prides itself on being the best grinder available for our medical customers. Our "knurled" handle is much more pronounced than other grinders and improves hand and finger grip. You can see the superior grip pattern and feel how much easier it is to turn. This ultra-grip lid makes it much easier to turn the grinder, reduces the torque required to use our product and provides a "buttery smooth" fluffing tool.
ULTRASONIC CLEANED
Santa Cruz Shredder is the only mill with rigorous ultrasonic cleaning processes for medical purposes. Our process uses high frequency sound waves and a medical grade solution to remove ALL contaminants. Cavitation bubbles created by this movement act on ALL contaminants that have been deposited during the machining process. This action penetrates into blind holes, cracks and even the smallest recesses and thoroughly removes all traces of contaminants firmly adhered to a surface (including dust, dirt, toxic machining lubricants, grease, fingerprints and toxic polishing compounds).
This is exactly the same process used in the medical industry to disinfect medical instruments before surgical procedures. Comparable manufacturers typically simply dip their product “in a bucket of day-old soap and blow it off with a tire tube”… Raw aluminum is indeed a porous material and requires ultrasonic cleaning to truly claim medical grade. Processed raw aluminium is contaminated with toxic substances and is considered unsafe for the end consumer. You can often see dirt and grime in other grinders, smell the machining oils and shop odors, and wipe other grinders with a cloth to expose polishes and other toxins.

BETTER SIEVES MEANS BETTER RESULTS
Santa Cruz Shredder uses a T304 Micronic Precision Woven stainless steel screen that will not fray. The optimal micron size of any grinder on the market. Other grinders use a smaller micron size (larger opening) to make it appear that they work by allowing more "stuff" to pass through, but in actuality they allow more contaminants (dirt, fertilizer, insect parts, etc.) to enter your final pollen compartment. Additionally, our screens are secured with a "drum skin tight" screen receiving design. This tightens the screen in all directions before locking it permanently in place. Other grinders have loose screens that stretch and warp, causing the screen to "pop" or shift and throw your herbal blends out of the product.
SCRATCH-RESISTANT
Santa Cruz Shredder has solved this problem. Anodizing is the only solution! Anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process used to create a strong protective layer for aluminum that prevents corrosion, wear and "galling" (failure) of threaded parts. After an acid bath, we hang them in special tanks that pass an electrical current through the part, creating a strong protective surface. Anodizing changes the microscopic texture of the surface, altering the crystal structure of the aluminum near the surface. It doesn't just bond to the surface, it actually becomes the new surface at the molecular level. Raw aluminum is a soft material that is susceptible to even the smallest scratches.
Our highest quality grinders are the only ones that are truly scratch resistant as they use aerospace anodizing techniques for protection. Comparable grinders are made from raw aluminum (unhygienic) which is very susceptible to scratches and cross threads and is only polished to temporarily create an illusion of quality (also unhygienic). We offer glossy and matte anodized finishes.
